Deployment of a New Marine Contingent to Secure U.S. Embassy in Haiti

TABARRE, Haiti.— Facing an increasingly unstable security situation in the Haitian capital, the U.S. Embassy announced the arrival of a new contingent of Marines tasked with reinforcing the protection of the diplomatic mission. According to the American representation, this deployment was carried out in direct coordination with the Haitian government following a formal request related to the deteriorating security climate. Indeed, in an official statement published Monday, the embassy explained that these reinforcements aim to ensure the continuity of essential operations within the diplomatic complex and to maintain the usual support provided to the Haitian National Police (PNH) as well as the Anti-Organized Crime Force (FLCO). Through this initiative, the United States reaffirms its commitment to remain an active partner in efforts to stabilize the capital and support local security forces in their fight against armed groups. The embassy also specified that it will remain open for emergency operations on November 19, despite the difficult operational context. Security Reinforcement Following an Armed Attack This decision comes four days after an attack directly targeting the diplomatic mission on November 13. Heavily armed individuals, presented as close to the Viv Ansanm coalition, had opened fire towards the building. The Marines responsible for protection retaliated, leading to sustained exchanges of gunfire that once again highlighted the severity of the security situation in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. This episode adds to a series of incidents that attest to the growing power of armed groups, whose control over several neighborhoods of the capital continues to expand. A Situation of Widespread Tension The resurgence of violence also led the Viv Ansanm coalition to impose a day of strike, which was widely observed in the metropolitan region. Under threat of retaliation, the doors of many businesses, schools, and institutions are closed, paralyzing a large part of the capital's daily activities. This deleterious climate comes as local law enforcement had deployed their heavy artillery in concert with the MSS to track a feared gang leader in the Cul-de-Sac plain. However, persistent insecurity, recurrent clashes between gangs and law enforcement, as well as institutional uncertainty, darken the prospect of a rapid return to stability, which is much needed for holding elections to renew political personnel and place the country on a constitutional path.
