Less than a month before the expiration of the Transitional Presidential Council's mandate, set for February 7, 2026, CARICOM's Eminent Persons Group (EPG), which propelled the CPT, expresses deep concern over the inability of Haitian actors to agree on a new consensual framework for political transition.
The Eminent Persons Group (EPG) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on January 9, 2026, renewed its commitment to support Haitian actors in finding solutions to the multiple political, security, and institutional challenges facing the country.
In an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), the EPG reiterates that the mandate of the Transitional Presidential Council expires on February 7, 2026, a crucial deadline for Haiti's political future. Despite continuous efforts by CARICOM and the international community to support a Haitian-led process, the group expresses deep concern over the slow pace of discussions among stakeholders.
According to the EPG, the various actors have not yet managed to overcome their differences to agree on a consensual Haitian agreement aimed at defining a new transitional mechanism, despite the many points of convergence noted in the proposals made public in recent months.
Faced with this impasse, CARICOM calls on stakeholders to demonstrate patriotism, placing the nation's supreme interest above all other considerations. For the regional organization, this is an essential condition to allow the Haitian people to freely determine their own destiny.
The EPG also emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stressing that a consensus among political actors, civil society, and the Haitian population must imperatively be found before February 7, 2026. Otherwise, the group warns, the country could face undesirable repercussions, both institutionally and in terms of security.
“Time is running out,” the statement concludes, calling for rapid and responsible mobilization to avoid a new phase of political uncertainty.
The days leading up to February 7 are expected to be decisive. Proposals are pouring in.
